가장 최근 미국에서 혈압 가이드라인으로 사용되고 있는 높은 혈압의 정의로 단독 이완기 높은 혈압(isolated diastolichypertension)이 지금은 더 자주 나타났으나, 이 상태는 심혈관계 결과의 증가 위험성과 관련이 없다고 판단된다는 새로운 연구 결과가 발표되었다.이 논문의 주저자인 John William McEvoy, MBCh(professor of preventive cardiology at the National University of Ireland, Galway)는 Medscape Medical News와의 인터뷰에서 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

Findings In a nationally representative US cross-sectional study that included 9590 adults, the estimated prevalence of IDH based on the 2017 ACC/AHA guideline vs the JNC7 guideline was 6.5%vs 1.3%, respectively. ​ In a longitudinal analysis that included 8703 adults, there was no significant association between IDH as defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA guideliine and incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart failure, or chronic kidney disease.

참고로 고혈압을 정의할 때 the 20최초 7 American College of Cardiology(ACC)/American Heart Association(AHA)혈압 가이드 라인에서는 고혈압의 기준을 ≥ 첫 40/90mmHg로 ≥ 첫 30/80mmHg로 낮춘 바 있다.
